COMMEMORATING D-DAY

Both my father and my Uncle Tom were at D-Day. My father was one of the first Navy SEALs, called “frogmen” at that time, and his brother was in the USAF 101st Airborne, the so-called “Screaming Eagles.”

My uncle went on to participate in the Battle of the Bulge and was captured in Bastogne, Belgium. He died in a POW camp in Germany and is buried at the American cemetery in St. Avold, France. I was hoping to participate in D-day ceremonies in his honor, but obviously nothing is going to take place at this point.

The French will commemorate with church bells on June 6 across the country. This is the best we can do under the circumstances.
