AUDACIOUS

Pour les vaincre, il nous faut de l’audace, encore de l’audace, toujours de l’audace…
(To defeat them, we need audacity, still audacity, always audacity …)

Georges Jacques Danton, 1792

In one of my French classes this Spring, the teacher introduced the word “audacieux.” The translation (audacious) wasn’t a big word in my vocabulary, but she said that this is what each of us was: audacious. Audacious for being brave to take the leap leaving family and friends behind and moving to France.

We all came for various reasons, but she was right. It was brave, and most of us didn’t realize how challenging it would actually be until we finally got here. I know that after my move with all the preparation, selling my business, selling my belongings, lining up the packers and the movers, arranging for my cat to come over, etc etc, I was EXHAUSTED! It took me a good eight months to recover. But it was and remains a great decision. For years I dreamed of living in France. Some days, I just have to pinch myself.
